![]() Chamonix, in the French Haute Savoie, is arguably the most famous village in the Alps. Already in 1786, when Mont Blanc – at 4,800 meters named the "monarch" of the Alps – was first climbed, the village was preparing itself for the wave of tourism that was to come. Farmers, hunters and crystal seekers gave way to mountain guides, ski instructors, lift operators and of course hoteliers. Today, Chamonix offers a huge network of trails, as well as buses and mountain lifts to facilitate their use by hikers of all levels. The Hotel An elegant four-star hotel, the Mont Blanc has been 150 years "at the summit of hospitality." It is situatied on a quiet side street near the very center of the village. Despite its small size (39 rooms or suites), it offers a sauna, indoor/outdoor swimming pool and massage salon. Its garden offers spectacular views of the Mont Blanc massif. An acclaimed chef adds to hikers' sense of well being. As the hotel brochure states: "One Mont Blanc has been facing the other for 150 years." ![]() The walks offer unlimited variety – vast meadows, lush forests, crashing waterfalls, high peaks and overwhelming glacial scenery. The outstanding trails are easily accessible. Some favorites among the endless possibilities: Aiguillette des Posettes, Col de Balme, Le Chapeau, Chalet des Pyramides, Le Brevent, Lac Blanc, Tete de Grand – Chantet, Plan de l'Aiguille – Montenvers. The scenery is simply spectacular. When You're Not Hiking Chamonix is a multi-faceted town, and most will want to spend a rest day(s) in exploring its cafes, restaurants, galleries, shops and museums. Numerous mountain railways and cable cars take guests to awesome viewpoints. The hotel garden and swimming pool are tempting. There are often special events, both sporting and cultural.
