The Village

Formerly a cloistered monastery, this tiny village survived the eviction of the monks centuries ago and today is a prized destination for knowledgeable hikers. It is on a shelf above the Schnalstal, a side valley of the Vinschgau, which reaches to the Austrian border and the Oetztal Alps. While Kurzras at the end of the valley is a popular ski resort, the rest of the valley is virtually untouched. The Schnalstal is deeply traditional, and Karthaus exemplifies its special charm.

The Hikes

The possibilities are many and thanks to the absence of lifts other than at Kurzras, the trails are uncrowded. The solitude adds to the beauty of the surroundings. Some favorite hikes include the Taeschljoch which leads to the neighboring Schlandrauntal and the Lafetzberg — a steep hike above the Mastauntal which leads to a breathtaking viewpoint. Equally popular, but less steep, is the beautiful traverse from Vernagt — high above the lake of the same name — to the valley's end. The charming hamlet of Katharinaberg is the gateway to a gorgeous walk through ancient farms to an alm high above the main Vinschgau valley with outstanding views.

The Hotel

The Goldene Rose is a jewel, preserved in traditional style with all the modern comforts. It has a cozy bar and an atmospheric "stube" in addition to the principal dining room. The cuisine offers international as well as local specialties, and the ambiance is warm and friendly. An added attraction — our host also owns a high climbing hut which is available for an adventurous overnight!

When You're Not Hiking

Karthaus — indeed the whole valley — lends itself to repose and contemplation, which is a favorite rest day activity. However, it has an archeology park (the Ice Man — "Oetzi" was found here quite nearby) which is popular with guests. It is possible to visit the famous Churburg — a castle which has a wide range of items of interest, including the largest private collection of armor in Europe. You can also visit Meran with its endless attractions.
