Profile: Soglio (Switzerland) + Meran  (Italy), Apr 20 - May 5, 2018
The Village

This ancient cobblestoned village lies high above the romantic Val Bregaglia. It is supported by farming, tourism and artisan products, particularly natural health and beauty products. Due to its extremely picturesque setting, it is the object of many photographic safaris in high summer, but is far calmer in the Spring. Soglio is about halfway between the Engadine and Lake Como, very close to the Swiss Italian border.

The Hikes

Due to its mild climate, the Bregaglia or Bergell is ready for hikers months before the nearby Engadine. There are no lifts, adding to the valley's aura of untouched solitude. Some of our favorite hikes include the "Sentiero Panoramica" — a beautiful high traverse — and the "Plattenweg" — a marvel of trailmaking and originally an ancient mule path. We will hike over the border to the charming Italian town of Chiavenna and also to the tiny hamlet of Savogno, built high above Chiavenna some 500 years ago to escape the valley's "dangerous vapors" at the time of the Plague. There are numerous "crotti" — or grottos — which add gastronomic interest to our rambles.

The Hotel

La Soglina is the newest of Soglio's three hotels. It is built in impeccable style, using the local granite. The rooms are very spacious, with views of the famous Piz Badile, Cengalo and the Sciora Group. The owner chef is Alsatian, and the food is as good as you would expect. In April, you can see the beginnings of the garden which is its pride in summer. Modern comfort in an ancient and unspoiled village is an appealing combination.

When You're Not Hiking

Most choose to use their day off to relax and take advantage of endless photographic opportunities. Shoppers might travel to St. Moritz — a beautiful ride through Engadine. Or, ride one of the mountain lifts in the Engadine to see the high peaks and watch the skiers trying to prolong the season. The fabulous Palazzo Vertemate is well worth a visit. Chiavenna is a lively town with a charming pedestrian zone and excellent restaurants.
