The Village Sulden is situated in Italy's Sud Tirol, in a side valley of the Trafoi Valley which connects Austria and the Sud Tirol with Bormio in the Valtellina of Italy; it lies directly beneath the Ortler, the highest peak of the Eastern Alps. Sulden lies in the middle of extensive meadows which in turn are surrounded by glaciers on three sides. At 1900 meters, it is one of our highest hiking villages. It has a full range of shops, hotels and restaurants, but maintains a serene ambiance. ![]() The trail system is outstanding, well groomed and well graded. A cable car and two chairlifts multiply the options, and five climbing huts provide food and shelter when desired. Among the many great hikes are the Rosim Valley, the Hintere Schontaufspitz (11,000 feet), the traverse from the Tabaretta Hut to the K2 Hut and the Zaytal with its Dusseldorfer Hut. The Hintergrat Hut lies directly beneath the Koenigspitz, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful peaks in the Alps. The Hotel The Gertraud is a Sud Tirol classic — small, cozy and featuring excellent cuisine with local specialties. All rooms are spacious, with balconies looking out on the marvelous scenery. The nightly salad and dessert buffets are very popular with our groups. The hotel also has a sauna. It has been catering to our groups for more than ten years. When You're Not Hiking The village is delightful, and most guests use a rest day to stroll through it, sit by the lovely lake and take in the scenery. Trips can be arranged to nearby attractions such as the Churburg castle (home of the largest private collection of armor in Europe), the cloisters of Marienberg and St. Johannes and the Stilfserjoch with its celebrated views. ![]() If you are intrigued by our "small is beautiful" philosophy and would like to receive additional information or make reservations for Sulden, or any of our upcoming trips, please email Sheila Duigan or call her direct at 800-291-8126. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
