More about: Swiss Alps HikingThe Swiss Alps are an ideal destination for great hikes full of peace, quiet and untouched nature. There are 50,000km (or 31,000 miles) of trails to take in the conifer forests, alpine flowers, waterfalls, snow-capped peaks and the striking contrasts of the Alps themselves. At Alpine Trails, our Switzerland hiking trips vary each year, but are often divided into the towns of Soglio, Sils Maria, and Appenzell. Soglio, an ancient cobblestoned village, lies above the Val Bregaglia and is supported by farming, tourism and artisan products. Soglio is the object of many photographic safaris in the summer, but its high altitude and mild climate makes it an ideal hiking destination for the Spring. Hikes in the Soglio region range from the "Sentiero Panoramica," a high traverse with simply breathtaking views to the "Plattenweg," which was originally an ancient mule path. Sils Maria lies on a narrow band of land between two lakes – Silvaplana and Sils – and sits at the bottom of the Bernina mountain group. The village has a truly Old World atmosphere, and the town's leading hotel, the Waldhaus, is a rare find. The Waldhaus is a large, five-star hotel without the stuffy attitude you'll find at most others, and at some 100 years old, it is truly unique. Hiking in the region is varied – from gently cut trails dotted with lakes to the most steeply cut valley in Switzerland – and the weather varies a great deal from one altitude to another. A Swiss Alps hiking excursion to Appenzell is another varied experience. Hikes vary from the impressive ridges of Mount Saentis to the lush surrounding farmlands. Local culture includes a distinctive school of painting, unique folk music – both orchestral and choral – museums and galleries.
