Profile: Tiers & Sulden — Italy, Jul 14 - July 29, 2012
The Town

Tiers is the principal village in the valley of the same name. Just minutes from Bolzano, the Tiersertal lies between the Eggental, the Karer Pass and the Groednertal (Val Gardena). Because of its central location, it give easy access to a wide variety of gorgeous hikes. Weisslahnbad lies five minutes above the town. it is nestled between two symbols of the Dolomites — the Schlern and the Rosengarten. Formerly a thermal spring, today it remains an island of tranquility with spa facilities.

The Hikes

Because of the advantageous location, we can wander freely through many of the best-known areas of the Dolomites while still avoiding any sign of mass tourism. Favorite hikes include:
  1. The Grasleiten Hut is reached through the idyllic Tschamintal which starts at our very doorstep. It is perched high upon a chasm-like valley, not nearly as impossible as it looks.
  2. Numerous trails lead to the Val Gardena and the famous Seiseralm above it.
  3. Monte Tschafon — an idyllic walk through a gorgeous pastoral landscape with views to the famous Vajolet Towers and — from the summit — panoramic views of the Eisack Valley with the snow-covered peaks of Meran and the Austrian Alps as background.
  4. A thrilling walk between the Karer Pass, the Rotwand Hut and the Rosengarten Hut — at the very foot of the Rosengarten cliffs.
Most of the walks lead to climbing huts or mountain farm restaurants — popular alternatives for those who want to sample local specialties rather than the usual peanut butter & jelly sandwiches!

The Hotel

The Dolomitenhotel Weisslahnbad combines the traditional ambiance of earlier times with all the modcern comforts. Rooms are spacious, and public rooms are tastefully furnished. The hotel offers indoor and outdoor pools, a tennis court, and a fitness room, as well as a wellness area with massages, sauna, solarium and more. There is a large breakfast buffet and choices at dinner.

When You're Not Hiking

For many, a relaxing day at the hotel spa is top priority. For the more culturally minded, a day in nearby Bolzano, with its outdoor market, fine restaurants, fascinating architecture and the Archeological Museum (with the famous "Oetzi" — the Ice Man) is the obvious choice.
